Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at UMN studying sex differences in autism spectrum disorder. Knits at conferences. Views are my own. (she/her)
Joined April 2021
Rockstar grad student and SEM guru @CarolynLasch presented our @ibis_research on amygdala trajectories and later anxiety at @FluxSociety in Paris!.
Excited to talk about my poster at @FluxSociety @Flux_Congress, "Amygdala trajectories in infancy are associated with increased anxiety at school-age in a sample enriched for familial likelihood for autism"

Really interesting article showing that the rate of diagnosed ASD is not the same as the rate of people meeting diagnostic threshold on the ADOS. More evidence supporting a need to rethink nuanced autistic presentations and evaluate sex-based measurement bias.
"Using the ADOS as a confirmatory diagnostic measure resulted in the exclusion of autistic females at a rate over 2.5 times higher than that of autistic males. Reliance on community diagnosis rather than confirmatory diagnostic assessments resulted in more equal sex ratios.".

Great feature on how our research can play out to help identify ASD-related concerns in girls and women earlier. Worth a read!.
McKenzie Saman wasn't diagnosed with autism until she was eight years old. Experts at @UMN_MIDB are working to close this care gap for girls by learning how to better assess symptoms so every child gets the support they need. Read her story.

And check out this feature in @Spectrum. covering our findings. I loved @AHalladayASF 's quote: “It’s taking one of the most established knowns about autism and turning it on its head" @ibis_research

The male sex bias in autism may in large part be a product of how common diagnostic tools measure traits in boys versus girls at a single point in time, according to a new study.

Thanks @AutismScienceFd and @AHalladayASF for featuring this work! Listen to the ASF Podcast to learn more about our new study! @ibis_research.
What happens if you take the autism diagnosis away and instead group by symptoms/features? @CaseyBurrowsPhD from the @UMNresearch and @autismbabybrain (IBIS Network) explains how it affects sex bias in diagnosis.

So glad this paper is finally out! Our new study finds 1:1 sex ratio in ASD-related concerns when using longitudinal data, correcting for sex-related measurement bias, and a high-likelihood for ASD sample. @ibis_research @isaStallworthy .

New findings from our team showing amygdala overgrowth prior to ASD diagnosis. Glad to be part of this great team!.

Super proud to contribute to this study with an incredible group of female colleagues and mentors. What started as a way to share our perspectives evolved into a call for action and way forward.
Faculty with the Medical School are laying the framework for more diversity, equity and inclusion opportunities in medicine and science, thanks to a new study. ➡️

Met one of our new lab members in person for the first time today and her first words were “you actually look like your website photo!” Not sure if I should feel flattered or too young for academia. #AcademicTwitter

Great listen if you care about the ethics of scientific reporting, the publish or perish culture in academia and/or anti-fat bias in "public health" policy and pop culture. Plus @yrfatfriend and @RottenInDenmark are delightful to listen to as always.
