Pretty obvious that government policy was all about controlling the public through fear rather than logic – and it worked. Of course, at the time, many in the media were arguing for even tighter restrictions.

@CarverEmily To be fair, as I recall, the public weren't responding to logic. The more logical argument is 'why did No10 break the rules, when we were penalised for doing so'.

@CarverEmily And Labour, SNP in power in devolved areas were actually implementing tighter restrictions, and usually if did same, made it law whilst England generally had guidance.
