Finally, it is known that visual perception Is altered in Parkinson’s disease, Schizophrenia, and Autism spectrum disorder. Thus, the participation of the direct and indirect pathways in visual feature extraction could help to develop novel treatments for visual abnormalities.

The activity of the direct and indirect basal ganglia pathways is normally considered antagonistic. Where the direct pathway facilitates movement whereas the indirect pathway inhibits movement. Surprisingly we found neurons from both pathways with high orientation selectivity.

Since the experiments of Hubel and Wiesel describing high orientation selectivity in primary visual cortex, visual perception has been deemed as a cortical attribute despite that subcortical areas receive direct projections from primary visual cortex.

Excited to share our preprint: “Encoding visual stimuli by striatal neurons” where we show that the striatum, a brain area usually related to learning goal-directed actions, participates in visual feature extraction! https://t.co/GXsnG7QnJJ
