Haudenosaunee lacrosse players needed pads. In hard times, they would make their own. In addition to twigs placed in the wool arm sleeves I’ve also heard of players cutting the hard covers off old books to slide into the pockets.

Beyond lacrosse, the other great passion of the Onondaga stick maker was fishing. His father, Lou, was Mohawk, and although he moved to Onondaga when he got married as is the Haudenosaunee matrilineal way, they spent time on his home turf, hunting and fishing land the St Lawrence
