About the only reason you would think of doing something like this is if you are afraid both the Suez Canal and the Horn of Africa are about to become hostile to your shipping.
@WickedTewi
Because they are moving cargo overland via truck and train through the UAE, Jordan and Israel instead of moving it via ship through the canal. This specifically seems to be done to avoid Egypt.
@CarolinaLion2
And the Cape of Good Hope (South Africa).
And the Panama Canal (China).
And Hormuz (Iran).
And Tierra Del Fuego (Argentina.)
Weird? Right?
Mahan wept.
@CarolinaLion2
A RR all the way across the deserts of Saudi Arabia would be a logistical and security nightmare and why switch to truck instead of rail in Greece?
@CarolinaLion2
This has to be worse than just going the other way, unless you're concerned about sea lanes that way too. Strait of Malacca? Panama Canal?
@CarolinaLion2
Wow! How innovative!! It was only used for 1000’s of years by Egyptian, Syrian, Persian, Greek, Roman ………. Camels and donkeys may actual be more efficient than rail through the Sahara.
@CarolinaLion2
That's the reason why Iran and Saud are fighting in Yemen.
It's one point of failure as well, will always be extremely valuable while it is.
