Cardinal Press takes flight at . We are an independent, nonprofit news site covering Southwest and Southside Virginia, with veteran journalist
@DwayneYancey
as editor. Formal launch later in Sept.
Opinion: We’re seeing a historic turnaround. Most rural counties now see more people moving in than moving out.
However, Fairfax County and Virginia Beach have posted the biggest population declines in the state.
Winner of Startup of the Year:
@CardinalNewsVA
for exceeding its initial five-year plan within its first 18 months and producing reporting that has led to measurable change — including securing $11M in aid for flood victims in a devastated Appalachian community.

Here's some of what we've been up to: On Monday, we'll announce our political reporter, who will be based in Richmond and give the region something it hasn't had in 8 years: A full-time Richmond bureau covering state gov't from the perspective of Southwest and Southside Virginia.
We are proud to announce that
@MSchmidtRVA
will be our political reporter. Based in Richmond, Markus will give us something that news media in Southwest & Southside haven't had in 8 years: A full-time state capitol bureau. More on Markus below:
Opinion: “Letter From Birmingham Jail” and “The Tragedy of Macbeth” are both on a list of 17 works that have been deemed “explicit” by Nottoway County.
Meanwhile, Madison County has banned 21 books outright.
The studio will be built at the casino in Bristol, rather than in Abingdon as originally announced. PBS Appalachia will be the nation’s first all-digital public TV station and will be available online, through an app and through local cable providers.
Opinion: Democrats are slight favorites in both chambers of the Virginia General Assembly.
For Republicans, the route to a majority runs through these 4 districts.
political forecaster
@ChazNuttycombe
breaks it down:
Chaz Nuttycombe may be the only analyst in the country who specializes in state legislative elections.
His “nerd monopoly” on the local elections has built him a following in political circles.
@ChazNuttycombe
@CNalysis
Breaking: After a Republican official sued the VA Dept. of Elections claiming Gov. Youngkin pushed the agency to change the 17th district's nomination process from a primary to a convention, a judge ordered the nomination switched back to a primary.
If you're a

journalist who got booted: We at Cardinal News in Virginia have doubled our staff in less than a year and expect to fund 3 more positions in coming months. We do serious journalism in an underserved region. Want to know more? DM us to start a conversation.
We are delighted to announce that Megan Schnabel will be our business reporter. Megan has been a journalist in Southwest Virginia for more than 25 years, most of that dealing with business news. We promised an All-Star team of journalists and we're delivering.
1) A grandmother found what she thought was an eviction notice taped to her front porch.
It was actually a "notice to quit," a tenant union organizer said. "It said, you basically have to pay $700 or you will be evicted. And she didn't owe any money."
🧵
Opinion: 140 years ago, the ‘Danville Massacre’ ushered in Jim Crow and changed the course of Virginia history.
Here's a look back at the 1883 riot that helped precipitate a voter backlash that brought an end to bi-racial cooperation in Danville.

We at Cardinal News in Virginia have doubled our staff in less than a year and expect to fund 3 new reporting positions in coming months. No formal job posting yet but we're already recruiting for them: Education, health, Martinsville. DM us or email our editor.
If you've been wondering why our account has been offline, here's why: So many people shared this story that it triggered Twitter's algorithms and Twitter thought we were spam. We got too popular too quickly!
As newspapers shrink, Cardinal News is committed to covering the entire region of South and Southwest Virginia.
We're excited to read Kevin's reporting on our community!
You may have noticed my geographic descriptor in tweets changing this week from Roanoke/NRV to Southwest/Southside Va (or often, SW/S'side Va). I will be writing about weather for larger region with
@CardinalNewsVA
, from Cumberland Gap to Cumberland County.
Opinion: Democrat candidate Lily Franklin says some donors didn’t give her money because they "don’t understand or care about Southwest Virginia."
She lost by just 183 votes, even though she received less funding than some other party candidates.
History comes 'round: 172 years of public service for the Slemp family of SW Virginia. And now
@ChuckSlemp
will be chief deputy to AG-elect

Virginia is one of 4 states pilot testing the USDA's agricultural climate-smart program. If the program went national, after 10 years they expect:
- Agricultural emissions to fall by 55%
- Total US emissions to fall by 8%
We've already announced Va. Communications Hall of Famer

Delegate
@DonScott757
and Sen. Travis Hackworth have a warm friendship, despite being from opposite sides of the aisle (and the state).
They recently brought their Richmond friendship on the road to Southwest Virginia.
I've been following this news startup. Their coverage area includes the rural mountain region where my husband's grandmother lives, and there is definitely a need for
@CardinalNewsVA
's important journalism.
A team at Virginia Tech determined that the FCC had undercounted Virginia’s broadband-deficient locations — data that was critical for getting federal funding to expand access to underserved areas.
Opinion: Southwest VA's new energy lab will be like the coal country equivalent of the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center — a brand name to pitch former coal mining land to energy companies.
You may notice a slight tweak to our name. We found some browsers didn't like our dot-press extension and some thought "Press" meant we had an actual press and print product. We don't; we're purely digital. So we're flying forward as Cardinal News.
Opinion: Should Virginia have a Secretary for Rural Economic Development?
An idea floated by a University of Virginia law professor and law student has been picking up support.
Our newest reporter,
@DeanPEStephens
, is set up in his office in uptown Martinsville — because you can find our reporters in the communities they report on.
Welcome again to Dean-Paul!
You can reach him with tips and ideas at dean

The American chestnut was largely decimated by an imported fungus that arrived in 1904.
But Virginia Tech genetic sequencing just confirmed that a 65-foot tree found in Delaware was not a hybrid, as most now are, but a pure-bred American Chestnut.
Biking is taking off in Southwest Virginia.
The Roanoke Valley, New River Valley and Lynchburg regions all have high school mountain biking teams, as do all three Albemarle County schools.
And Roanoke College hopes to add cycling as a varsity sport.
Mac McClung, the former Scott County star, dazzled the sports world by winning the NBA dunk contest this weekend — while wearing his old high school jersey.
We at Cardinal are delighted to announce that
@MaryTrigiani
of Abingdon has joined our community advisory committee. Stand by for more announcements as we prepare to take flight as an independent, nonprofit news source providing in-depth journalism for Southwest and Southside.
Cardinal News just received a grant for a Martinsville reporter. This will be our 5th reporting position, more than double what we started with a year ago.
Cardinal News names Megan Schnabel as our new managing editor.
Schnabel was one of Cardinal’s first 2 reporters and has been a journalist in SWVA for more than 25 years. The new position was created to work with Cardinal’s growing reporting staff.
Opinion: A mistake by the Census Bureau means the new redistricting plan puts two voters in a precinct all their own, which means we can all know how they voted.

Cardinal News in Virginia is hiring. We've more than doubled our staff in our first year, thanks to strong community support for in-depth journalism. Inquire within.
Happy birthday to us!
Cardinal News turns 2 today. We started with a staff of 3, now we have 11 full-timers and 2 part-timers.
Here's what that means for us, and where we plan to go next.
The General Assembly hasn't changed what court-appointed lawyers in child dependency cases are paid in 23 years.
That translates to poor representation and support for parents, particularly in rural areas.
Metal firm
@Va_MetalFab
will move into the former Thomasville furniture plant, adding 130 jobs in Appomattox.
In 2014, the state gave money to a Chinese auto parts company to locate there, but the firm disappeared and never returned the funds.
