On Tumblr, I get a lot of anonymous asks. I always welcome questions about my research & I don't think I'm scary to approach, but ask your anon questions here if you want: https://t.co/piIzmeeioo WHAT DO YOU WANNA KNOW?

#academia Preparing my The Arctic Council article for submission to [Redacted] Journal!! Their required citation system is ugly AF but we roll. This article took two years to write and I cannot wait until it's published. So much new info!

People mixing up the words expedition and exhibition is a thing of all time. Here McClintock does it in a letter to John Barrow. He's referring to the Royal Naval Exhibition but writes 'Expedition'. [JB's 1891 journal]

"I'd say we owe Ross the benefit of a more sophisticated scrutiny. Many of these caustic treatments belie the fact that he was one of the most widely admired explorers of his generation." Huw Lewis-Jones, you're a real one.👏

12% sailing with Sir John Ross! I'm sure we will have a delightful and successful expedition with our good, kind, and brave leader.

This is Peter Barrow, JB's younger brother, whom Fitzjames lent some money to in Singapore in 1841. And I repeat: there was no scandal! [My JB scrapbook]

In that case I would rather say that the Search Expeditions were a remarkable success, because they brought back the proof of where the FE had been and did lots of surveying and scientific experimentation of their own.

My Arctic Council article is almost finished now! After two years, haha. A little snippet, with some 'wisdom' from Clements Markham. Calling the Franklin Expedition a most remarkable success in any way is wild.

One of my most special possessions is John Barrow's own copy of his book 'Mountain Ascents' (1886), that he gave & inscribed to Gilly, the orphaned daughter of his friends, who he helped raise & loved very much. So happy this book ended up with me.❤️ [My collection/JB journal]

Sherard Osborn in my John Barrow Scrapbook. According to Clements Markham, Fitzjames and Osborn were JB's best friends.

Hall wasn't present, the paper was read by the RGS's secretary Norton Shaw. John Barrow was going to read it, but he had a throatache (still attended). Also in attendance: John Rae, Sherard Osborn, Edward Belcher (👎), Richard Collinson a.o.

After the reading of Charles Francis Hall's paper 'Frobisher Strait Proved to Be a Bay', about his recent Arctic Expedition at the RGS on 13 April 1863, several Arctic officers responded. George Back doesn't want to say John Ross' name. However, Sir John Barrow is quoted.

Oh no, dear kind John Ross fell ill on his way to London! Thankfully he also had kind relatives (as opposed to evil ones) who took him in. He wrote to Edward Parry:

Letter written by Sherard Osborn & signed by officers (McClintock, Osborn, Meecham, Vesey Hamilton, Allard, etc) of the 1852-54 Search, stating that an oak stanchion found by John Rae didn't belong to any of the late search vessels. [2 April 1852, ADM 7/194, TNA]

"In afternoon went to Westminster Abbey and inspected Mr Noble's work – the Monumental Tablet to Sir John Franklin." [John Barrow's journal, 26 August 1875]
