My original data were collected a year ago in October 2023, whilst the BBC results were produced in Summer 2024. Preliminary results from our @AFSGUK-funded study (with @CallumDeery2) suggest 87% of ads remain non-compliant in late 2024. Sadly, the situation has NOT improved!

Gambling mechanics also present a difficult regulatory tightrope due to the difference between aesthetic and mechanical overlap, for example Balatro and Sunshine Shuffle both were pulled from sale due to aesthetic crossover with poker, while loot box filled games remain on sale.

The skills to create online casinos also have a lot of crossover with games, and increasingly advertise to games talent (the euphemistic phrase "mathematical game design" being a common buzzword for the role),

Harmony between these two industries is hardly new, early arcades evolved from penny machines and fair games after all, but in the past it felt like the games industry attempted to distance itself from gambling, whereas now it embraces the earning potential.

One thing that's surprising me watching these ads is how many I would consider gambling and not games. Slot machines and Bingo games for example, which are labelled (and age rated) as games purely by virtue of the inability to "cash out",

One pixel art frog. Also a thread about the convergence of games and gambling: As I mentioned in a previous post I'm currently involved in a research project looking at the disclosure of monetisation in game ads....

11 games in, we have 1 ad with disclosure of monetisation (in just 1 of the 10 ads currently being run for that game, and so small it's hidden below the video controls) Will anyone do better? Find out soon!

How compliant are game adverts with new industry guidance on disclosing monetisation? I'm working with @LeonXiaoY and others to investigate compliance with new guidance and regulations for disclosing monetisation in game ads on Meta's ad library.
