Another story about construction projects means an updated look at the progress of Scotia Place. Here's what the new home for the Calgary Flames looks like today. The smaller community rink (SE corner of the land) will be called Esso Community Arena. All set to open Fall 2027

How much work was completed in 2025 on the new home for the #Flames? In short, a lot. About 1,100 foundational piles have been poured for Scotia Place. Work is underway to install 9,000 metric tonnes of steel for the Event Centre. I'll have more in a @CTVCalgary story soon!

BREAKING: Calgary council has started the process to repeal blanket rezoning. A 13-2 vote directs admin to restore the Land Use Bylaw back to what it was before citywide rezoning. Changes won't be finalized until a public hearing is held in March 2026. #yyccc @CTVCalgary

Among the 38 proposed amendments, council approved transit fare increases for 2026; boosted transit funding to get more buses on roads; passed a $9M pilot project to have more security at transit stations during rush hour. $9M was cut from the city’s Climate dept. #yyccc

Coming into last week, single-family homes were in line for a 5.8% property tax increase. To bring it down to 1.64% combined, council approved cancelling the planned tax shift and redirected $50M in investment income into operating instead of reserves.

Second amendment for the City of Calgary to redirect $50 million in investment income to fund operations instead of going into reserves. Will bring the overall property tax increase in 2026 to 1.6%. Passed 11-4 (with many more savings/spending changes to come). #yyccc

NEW: Calgary council starts changes to the 2026 budget. Up first, cancelling the planned tax shift from non-residential to residential properties. This would bring the res. property tax increase from 5.8% down to 3.6% (non-res up to 3.6%). Passed unanimously @CTVCalgary #yyccc
