11/ We're proud of our work, but have much more to do. Some of the ideas we brainstormed might make their way into future plans, while others might never take off. Thank you to UCSF researchers, staff, students, leaders who spend a day celebrating, connecting, and dreaming big.

10/ We celebrated wins, but our focus was on the future, and setting a foundation for CTSI's 3rd decade. We spent hours brainstorming on clinical AI safety, workflows for multilingual recruitment, turning research into policy, growing CRC pathways for more populations, and more.

9/ At a university as big as UCSF, you can end up with wasteful duplicated processes. That's why CTSI helped incubate and power a new system to streamline applying for and receiving internal grants at UCSF. 26 agencies now participate in the new system.

8/ When we're successful, our work just blends into the university's infrastructure. Many newer UCSF researchers can take for granted that they can search de-identified medical records, or add new RCT options to the electronic health record.

7/ Scientists aren't trained to build and sustain strong community partnerships. CTSI's community engagement team helps researchers be good partners, respond to community priorities, while working to institutionalize best practices and reform practices.

6/ When we launched, researchers told us they sometimes had no idea the world expert on a topic worked in the building next door. That's why we launched UCSF Profiles, making it trivial to find UCSF experts. The site had over 2 million visits in 2023.

5/ We know clinical trials fail if they don't recruit enough participants. We've worked with 150+ studies to find good candidates, sending invitations via either electronic messages or paper mail. We sweat the details, so researchers don't have to.

4/ We've proud to have played a supportive role in so many critical projects, like the recently FDA-approved use of Teplizumab for Type I diabetes, the COVID-RECOVER study assessing long-term impacts, monoclonal antibody therapy for COVID-19 infection…and so many more.

3/ In 2023, CTSI supported 220 research protocols, and offered 550 new consultations. We now have experts on call whenever a UCSF researcher needs help with biostatistics, navigating ethics or equity, scientific writing, or using AI for health research.

2/ UCSF Chancellor Hawgood shared a story from early in his career, seeing simple maternal mortality interventions taking over a decade to reach Central Valley community hospitals. Changing practice takes work, which is why CTSI's mission is so critical.

We just wrapped up our 2024 Clinical & Translational Science Institute retreat, to celebrate two decades of work, and plan for the future. Since 2006, we've been working to move research out of the lab, to improve real-world health outcomes. Here are our biggest takeaways… 🧵
