Obviously, companies shouldn’t hire people who will not be a good fit with their organization. But also, don’t just hire people you want to hang out with. What companies should be doing is modify their hiring practices to ensure they evaluate a diverse pool of candidates.

‘Culture fit’ can mean code for a set of unwritten rules that maintain the status quo. A status quo that homogenizes the workforce and discourages diversity. Hiring for ‘culture' can therefore be a way to perpetuate systemic racism, ageism, sexism, and other implicit biases.
