Butties - not the type you eat! A 'butty' boat is where two boats work in a pair (possibly coming from the term meaning 'friend' or 'fellow worker'). This meant more living space for larger families and increased capacity to carry cargo πͺ Image - Canal & River Trust Collections.

Works are complete and navigation has resumed along the Shropshire Union in Cheshire π Countless hours, Β£850k and 120 tonnes of clay later and this stretch (the final major engineering feat by esteemed civil engineer Thomas Telford) is back open for navigation π

From the late 1700's, hundreds of companies transported goods using narrowboats, many of which were towed by horses. The entire infrastructure of the waterways was built for the horse-drawn era, for example the smooth curves on bridges and buildings to avoid snagging towlinesπ΄

The Leigh Branch has fully reopened for navigation π Closed in August after a large water main burst beneath the bank between Poolstock Lock and Bamfurlong Bridge, United Utilities and our engineers have since been collaborating on the bespoke canal repair π

Evolution of the narrowboat - Starvationers π The first narrowboat model, this wooden boat was invented during the Industrial Revolution to enter the mines of underground canal systems. Sizes of starvationers varied greatly, carrying anything between 2 & 12 tonnes of cargo πͺ

Send Sculptor birthday wishes - today she turns 90 π₯³ Built in 1935, she has carried precious cargo and served as a WWII fire-fighting boat in London. Now proudly moored at our Canal Museum in Stoke Bruerne, Sculptor is a rare surviving link to Britainβs working-boat heritage π
