🌋 Day 1 in Iceland We started where Icelandic society began — at Þingvellir, home to the world’s oldest parliament. Then, science met steam at the erupting Strokkur Geyser. To end the day? We enjoyed a bath in a naturally heated hot pool with a golden view.

Using light and fluorescence microscopy, researchers found that most archaea gathered near the chimney sediment. They received no nutrients or vitamins — yet their growth rates nearly matched those in ideal lab conditions, sustained solely by the geochemical environment. (4/5)

The archaea used the H₂ released during their formation to produce methane. They powered this through the ancient acetyl-CoA pathway — a metabolism so efficient it’s been called “a free lunch you’re paid to eat.” (3/5)

To investigate this, researchers recreated early Earth conditions. Since modern archaea inhabit hydrothermal vents, the team built mini versions using a method called chemical garden simulation: injecting Naâ‚‚S into FeClâ‚‚, forming small black iron-sulfide chimneys. (2/5)
