This particular plane has been running flights out of Pole for the past several weeks supporting the @COLDEX_STC project. It fires radar through the mile-thick ice sheet in hopes of locating ancient ice which may capture gaps in the earth's climate record.

Drilling is running smoothly from 8:00 to 0:00: 30 m of ice were added today, reaching a depth of more than 1260 m. Core processing is going well too and at this rate they will caught up with the drilling by next week. The dual tube snow sampler was also tested. 📸Muhl©PRNA/IPEV

Their work near the South Pole means camping on the ice without showers or flushing toilets for seven weeks — but what we can learn about climate change there is essential to science.
