#WhatHappenedToUsMatters. There are a lot of explanations about the violence in our country but one key explanation that we tend to neglect is the unresolved trauma we have. This trauma is historical, collective and is embedded in the cultures of our institutions.

Even before the pandemic, South Africans lived in an anxiety-inducing society. Our society is marred by issues such as murder, hijacking, rape, and poverty, to name a few. Children are not spared from the effects of the stressful society we live in.

Covid-19 has weighed heavily on school pupils' mental health and performance, and the matric results are indicative of this. This year's matric class needs mental support if we are to see them mirror the pre-pandemic 2019 pass rate.

Since much of South Africa's trauma is collective, the key vehicle for facilitating healing lies with our leaders. #DayOfReconciliation

Healing cannot be separated from people's lived experiences. Sincere redress requires political, socioeconomic, and trauma-informed solutions that prioritise mental wellness. #MentalMatters #DayOfReconciliation #WhatHappenedToUsMatters

So often through commemorations such as #DayOfReconciliation, we come together and reflect on our dressed wounds. We believe that South African society has not truly healed from historical markers such as Apartheid. #MentalMatters #WhatHappenedToUsMatters

A broken, traumatised boy exists behind a GBV perpetrator. Unless we find a way to reach those young boys and facilitate healing, we are not going to succeed in our fight to #EndGBV. #16Days #MentalMatters

As the Centre for Mental Wellness we recognise the importance of healing our trauma as South Africans. As we work to hold gender-based violence perpetrators to account, our outcomes also need to help survivors heal. #16Days #MentalMatters
