Similarly, in the United States, June 19 is marked as Juneteenth - a commemoration of the day in 1865 that enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were finally informed of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

The Slavery Abolition Act was enacted August 1, 1834, ending over 200 years of legal slavery. The enslavement of Africans played a significant role in the colonization of Canada, which is still deeply felt today.
