Hearing stories from other patients and families, seeing the passion from the WEEI & NESN teams, Dana-Farber staff, all the volunteers, and feeling the overwhelming support from every corner of the park… it was powerful. It reminded me why I keep fighting. Why we keep fighting.

There’s something about this place—the History, the Community, the Cause—that just lifts your spirit. It’s not just about the park and baseball. It’s about people coming together with heart, grit, and purpose to support something bigger than all of us.

Being back at Fenway Park today with my daughter Kayla for the 2025 Jimmy Fund Telethon filled me with a kind of energy I didn’t know I needed. After 10 years of fighting this battle with advanced RCC, there are certainly days that feel heavier than others. But today wasn’t one.

With federal support for cancer research under fire, the 2025 Jimmy Fund Telethon becomes a critical bulwark against:.-Endangered clinical trials.-Disrupted research ecosystems.-The rollback of decades-long gains in survival and treatment.

Unrestricted donor funding—from efforts like the telethon—offers crucial flexibility to fill gaps caused by federal cuts, enabling:.-Early-stage, high-risk research.-Clinical trials and drug development.-Patient access programs and staffing.-Hope: where government support falters.

4. Philanthropy is a Lifeline for Dana‑Farber especially during times like this. The Jimmy Fund Telethon has raised over $74 million since 2002 to support Dana‑Farber’s cancer research and care.

Cutting cancer research funding isn’t just risky—it’s potentially catastrophic. Research reductions may reverse decades of progress in diagnosis, treatment, and survival improvements. Loss of NCI-backed research will cost lives.

3. The Current Funding Crisis WILL have long-term impact and set critical life-saving research back for years.A broad sentiment of crisis has emerged: “Impossible to rebuild,” warns a recent scientific report, especially concerning pediatric cancer research.

Indirect-cost caps (e.g., at 15%) are jeopardizing lab operations, staffing, and institutional support—particularly for early-career researchers.

2. Federal Funding Cuts will create Disruption of Science, Trials, and Talent.Already, more than 1,600 NIH grants and 240 clinical trials have been terminated or delayed—many related to cancer.

Broader NIH funding could face cuts as steep as 40%–55%, jeopardizing early-stage research and dismantling vital U.S. biomedical infrastructure.

1. Federal Cancer Research Funding is Plummeting. The President’s FY 2026 budget proposal slashes funding for the National Cancer Institute (NCI) by approximately 37%, nearly $2.7 billion lost compared to the current year.
