As part of its advocacy work, CFTC encourages enterprises to be engaging it on such trainings as they are crucial to enhancing compliance with the CFTA. Recently, CFTC has conducted similar trainings with Chipiku Stores, Illovo Sugar Malawi and Old Mutual Limited.

“We have a provision for regulating buyer power. We have handled complaints on this especially from farmers that are under Agricultural Commercialization Project (AGCOM),” said Bota.

On how the Commission protects farmers, Bota said the Competition and Fair Trading Act (CFTA) now has a provision on buyer power which protects farmers from unscrupulous traders.

Responding to some questions, Bota pointed out that CFTC works in collaboration with other regulators in consumer protection. She gave an example of food safety and standard issues where CFTC works with the Malawi Bureau of Standards in ensuring that consumers are protected.
