Mechanical thinning & prescribed burning being done to enhance fire protection of Calif forests provide many other benefits we depend on: better air quality, forest resilience, water for downstream users, carbon storage, habitat, recreation & more.

We show annual Sierra Nevada evapotranspiration scaled from flux-tower data to be a central metric of water-balance change & variability, also key to diagnosing uncertainties in catchment precipitation & discharge.

Tree losses were concentrated in the hottest parts of the state. As summer temperatures continue to climb, even more of California's forests will be threatened by wildfire and climate stress. 4/n
