From 1944-1986, roughly 30 million tons of uranium ore were extracted from the Navajo Nation accounting for nearly half of all uranium extracted within the U.S. As a result, thousands of our Navajo people were exposed to dangerous levels of radiation that led to illnesses& deaths

During my State of the Navajo Nation address, I told delegates I would welcome meetings with them individually. I appreciate Council Delegate Andy Nez and LDA Amber Benallie for taking time to meet on the priorities of Fort Defiance, Sawmill, Crystal, Red Lake and his district!

David W. Yazzie's story is just one example of the challenges that many veterans face when they return home from service. While there are resources available to help, many veterans still slip through the cracks. We must continue to support our veterans.

I had the pleasure of speaking to the new students who attended their first day of orientation at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University. I told them they are the next generation of lawyers, who’ll one day have the power to make a real difference.

Yesterday, I approved $11.34 million in funding that is bringing water to 1,600 residents in To’Haajilee’ and the communities along the Navajo-Gallup Pipeline who have waited 20 years to receive water. Residents will soon have access to clean water.

We have a lot of progress to make in streamlining our Navajo Nation government. I issued Executive Order No. 01-2023 to cut through some red tape and to greatly reduce some of the paperwork that hits my desk and the desks of our employees. Let’s keep improving direct services.

The Navajo Nation Office of the First Lady and Strengthening Nations are collaborating to meet a need for winter clothing for our unsheltered relatives. During this time of year, this is critical and immediate, and it’s something we can all help alleviate.

As Arizona State Representative, First Lady Jasmine Blackwater-Nygren, Sen. Theresa Hatathlie & State Rep. Myron Tsosie, worked hard to get funding for road improvements. Today, I was honored to sign the contract that’ll put those dollars to work for the community of Sweetwater.

Lillian Lincheze Lujan served in the U.S. Women’s Army Corps from 1943 to 1945. At 104 years of age, she lived a long life that we, as Navajo People, celebrate. I issued a proclamation today naming March 10, 2023, Lillian Lujan Day across the Navajo Nation in her honor.

Memorial Day is about remembrance. This is the day that we have to continue to remember our soldiers, continue to remember them in a good way, and continue to remember their families. Military service means some may not return. Among those who did not are who we honor here today.

I have spared no expense or equipment to help Chinle residents affected by flood waters from overflow released by Wheatfields Lake and Tsaile Lake. I am thankful for everybody involved, including my staff, Apache County, and the people donating clothing and food.

I met with Governor Lujan Grisham on Friday on infrastructure spending, uranium cleanup and renewable energy. Our state-level partnerships are continuing strong. With strong advocates and partners at the state level, we can do some great work in the coming months and years.
