In scouting your reputation is all you really have. Don't turn down opportunities because you are worried you aren't ready for the move, but equally don't try and bull shit your way into a role, because you will be found out straight away. Trust yourself, and your judgement.

Too many people I see on Football Twitter still ripping into live scouting, if they are analysts, or ripping into analysis, if they are traditional scouts.
You are all idiots. It's all about taking the best of both to create a scouting process. How many times do you need telling?

I will let you all into the big secret of scouting and recruitment. Get people in who specialise. Have analysts, have traditional scouts, use video, go to live matches. Don't let people tell you one method works for all.

When starting out scouting the best way to develop is by doing, so go out to local matches, write up reports, ask people to read them and give you pointers. Look at volunteering for a local side. All practice helps.

Had a few messages already this year about how to get into scouting. My tips are to get out live & get some practical experience. Be honest with your assessments. Understand it's going to be a long slog before you get paid roles. Talk to people & ask questions. Good luck.

If I don't manage to get another role within football scouting, I think I am going to try and go to 1 match in every round of the Scottish FA Cup. Choose and initial fixture and follow the winning side onto the next round all the way to the final.

We've gone from one extreme to the other. Stated with scouts burying their heads in the sand, refusing to look at the value analysis has in football, to now analysts forgetting that you need to actually watch players to help round your decisions.

1 year ago today I woke up to missed calls and messages to say that Karl Newton had slipped in the lakes and had passed away on the 30th of June. I couldn't believe what I was being told.
I miss you every day, mate. I miss our chats and your advice always raised my spirits.

Employ the right people, and your club will benefit...and yes that is EMPLOY not just offer them voluntary positions to boost your "staff" numbers. Value your workforce and see your club improve.
Clubs would prefer to burn piles of cash on players who rarely if ever make the matchday squad, then pay (sometimes not even pay) academy coaches, analysts, S&C etc low wages to work hideous hours
Imagine if this balance was addressed?

Recruitment in football isn't a "one size fits all" process. There are clubs who do superbly well at all level, with contrasting budgets and methods, but all with the aim of finding the best players who fit their club. Stop with the "you are doing it wrong" attitude (1)
