Dearest gentle reader, it is with much pride that I present to you my very first scientific publication. So happy to finally get my MS work out there! A huge thanks to everyone who pitched in to make it happen!! Harrison et al. has a nice ring to it 😎 https://t.co/jzX5VJtv0T

DNA Extraction question! 🧬 I'm ISO a good kit that is cost effective, works in plate format, and will provide good yields from whole-body single individual Drosophila samples 🪰. Our lab previously used the Axygen kit but they don't have enough in stock rn. Plz RT

p.s. If you just wanna see pics of the cool soil-dwelling arthropods that we found, check out the first supplementary material file 😉

Biology in nature does not always fit into neat little human-created boxes like “female” or “male”. Sad to see the hate and bigotry being so casually thrown around right now. As a biologist and a lover of sport, disheartening to say the least. #Olympics2024Paris

But, individually, we can conquer imposter syndrome - because people are really out here submitting first drafts. Don't do that. But, don't pursue perfection either. A lot of revising happens between acceptance and publication. Perfect is the worst enemy of good enough.

It’s teaching evaluation season for those of us who taught this past semester. Just gonna drop this ✨gem✨here as a reminder that students hold all sorts of biases and that existing as a queer scientist is not “inappropriate for the classroom” 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️

PSA for undergrads: TAKE A CLASS IN BIOINFORMATICS…. sincerely, an incredibly frustrated PhD student who just spent all morning fighting with the simplest of code only to find a single invisible character ruining my files. I promise you’d rather suffer now than later 👩💻

Incredibly disheartening to see how @virginia_tech and @UMich have chosen to handle students and faculty exercising their right to non-violently protest. Whatever your beliefs on the matter, urging #divestment IS NOT hate speech. Referring to protesters as “terrorists” is 🍉

I'm in desperate need of assistance. What do the science girlies listen to while they're reading papers? Anything with lyrics distracts me, but this coffee shop is silent and that is NOT the vibe. Accepting any and all recommendations ☺️🎶

Definitely digging 40 holes by hand and using stinky cheese traps to catch weird bugs! 🤣 Featuring my lovely partner who frequently lended a hand

Here’s my academia gripe of the week. Everyone on campus always has headphones in/on and NOBODY is ever jamming. I mean no dancing, lipsyncing, not even subtle head bobbing. Meanwhile I’m out here walking across campus performing silent concerts 💃🎧

Saw one of those Hokies football hype posts on here since the season is coming soon. I’ve had Enter Sandman stuck in my head since and I just caught myself bouncing to it 🤣 once a Hokie always a Hokie 🤷♀️

Our study on #butterfly #evolution, #hostplants & #ranges is now formally out! We built a phylogeny of 2000 sp and found butterflies originated in N. America 100M years ago, likely fed on legumes. ~100 scientists from 28 countries contributed. Thanks all!
