News: The Reds have hired Pirates former pitching coach Oscar Marin as their new bullpen coach. The Reds included that Marin oversaw “a staff that featured 2025 NL Cy Young Award winner Paul Skenes” in their press release.

Baseball doesn't need a cap - it has one. it needs a floor You wanna play poker at the highest level? Now there's a minimum buy in. If you - the billionaire - don't have enough money, then you can't play. Franchise values are exploding. They ALL have the money.

This isn’t a defense of team owners like Nutting, who can undoubtedly commit more money to payroll than they do. However, if the low payroll teams all spent a bunch more, they’d eventually price themselves out of the market and into serious debt.

This chart is fine for seeing who writes the biggest checks. But using it to judge competitiveness or willingness to win is bullshit. It leaves out the actual economic reality of MLB and mixes unmatched data.
