Join The Bronx County Historical Society for a virtual book talk by Scott R. Ferrara on his recently published Accused of Witchcraft in New York, full of harrowing narratives of those who were accused of witchcraft in the area of today's Bronx and beyond.

The multiracial group would also splinter off into their own affinity based groups including White Lightning, a sub-sect of white Spirit of Logos members who focused on mobilizing working class white people throughout the Bronx. (5/6)

Founded in 1971 by a group of patients formerly receiving treatment as the hospital's state run residential therapeutic community, Spirit of Logos, sought to give back control to residents over their own rehabilitation. (4/6)

After 8 years the program was shut down by the city but its legacy continues on in the political organizations that emerged as a result of the hospital takeover including the Spirit of Logos (3/6)

The group quickly established a community controlled detoxification treatment center-- what would come to be known as the People's Detox Program-- that rejected the use of methadone and employed alternative medicine (2/6)

In 1970, a group of Young Lords, Black Panthers, & radical healthcare professionals successfully seized a wing of the Nurses Residence in Lincoln Hospital in the South Bronx (1/6)

The Jackie Robinson Papers, now available in the Bronx County Historical Society digital collections, include fliers, editorials, & letters imploring Branch Rickey to sign Black players & break the color line in America’s favorite pastime. (3/4)

In a letter to Dodgers General Manager Branch Rickey, Bronxite Alfred Kestenbaum wrote, “If I knew that these talented Negroes were given a fair and square opportunity, I would stand with the Brooklyn club until I died.” (2/4)
