The night reached an almighty crescendo with the greatest men’s 10,000m in history as Ethiopia's Haile Gebrselassie won gold in one of the closest finals on the track.

Then Romania's Gabriela Szabo held off Ireland’s Sonia O’Sullivan for the women’s 5,000m title. Meanwhile, the penultimate track final of the night saw Maria Mutola come from behind down the home stretch to win the women’s 800m and Mozambique's first Olympic gold.

Not long after, Cuban Anier Garcia defeated world champion Colin Jackson and reigning Olympic champion Allen Johnson in the men's 110m hurdles.
