let's be real, michelangelo was paid around US$600,000 (in today's money) for the sistine chapel, the pope had to beg him to do it, and it took him over five years because he ran away *at least* twice to have an artistic meltdown
he was *not* expected to to hold down another job
How is it that one person can produce all of this?
That person lived 500 years ago — so why hasn't humanity produced another talent like him in all the time since? 🧵

I think the Pope threatened him with excommunication? If I remember right Michelangelo preferred sculpting & did not want to paint this. Didn't he hide the pope in 1 of the depictions of hell? The whole deal is a wild ride.
But yes paying artists is the thing that gets good art.
