Despite repeated questioning from me, Council Chairman Mendelson and others, Executive branch officials continued to sidestep specific questions about MPD collaboration.

Together we can work to make street closures safer, cheaper, and easier & I look forward to the next steps.

For all these reasons, it’s critical that we adopt standards that will keep residents & visitors safe from vehicular terrorism as we open our streets, reimagine public spaces, and provide safe spaces for walking, biking, and other social activities.

And staffing for road closures & special events is a big pressure for overtime spending.

Unlike barriers designed for this purpose, many of the tools DC uses to close a street are not properly crash rated & are not certified as "Anti-Terrorism Technologies" by the Department of Homeland Security.

My bill, the Vehicular Terrorism Prevention Amendment Act, which received a Council hearing yesterday, aims to fix that.

Both my legislation and the Task Force will enable us to more safely & efficiently close streets for community events. DC’s current practice for street closures is expensive, unclear & unsafe - one reason why we lag in implementation of open streets compared to peer cities.

Yesterday, while my bill to require standards for safe and effective road barriers was heard, the City Administrator released a new order that establishes a Task Force on Vehicular Terrorism Prevention. The task force takes inspiration from my legislation.

The District Snow Team has been working overnight to get ahead of this morning's winter weather. Plows and salt trucks have been out treating roads with our brine-beet juice mix to help make your morning commute safer. Here’s what to expect today: ⚠️ Roads may be slushy or icy

Next week I’ll publish a report from our human rights roundtable with findings and recommendations, and I’ll introduce legislation to address DC government’s inadequate response.

In October, I held a hearing on possible human rights violations resulting from federal intrusion in DC, with dozens of witnesses – but nobody from the Executive branch showed up. Today’s hearing in the Judiciary Committee is another important – and overdue - step.

Today, the Washington Post reports that 80 pct of those arrested by the feds have no criminal record. This isn’t/has never been about “targeting violent crime.”

Yesterday, a federal judge confirmed what we already know: fed law enforcement has been carrying out unlawful, warrantless civil immigration arrests. The Mayor and MPD leaders refuse to acknowledge the extent of what they have allowed under their watch.

Mayor Bowser and her administration have escalated the harm occurring in our neighborhoods from this federal takeover. People are afraid and angry and deserve straight answers about MPD’s collaboration with ICE.

Again, a complete lack of transparency from the Bowser administration about MPD’s collaboration w/ICE, whose actions are upending families, and making us all less safe, violating DC law under the executive’s direction.

The first EXTREME COLD ALERT of the season goes into effect at 8PM. It’s going to be dangerously cold overnight! As a reminder: we have shelter space for anyone who needs it. Call the Shelter Hotline to request free, accessible transportation to a DC shelter: 202-399-7093.

This is a really important win in the fight to protect our immigrant neighbors from indiscriminate enforcement. One more reason Mayor Bowser must put an end to MPD collaboration with ICE. https://t.co/UAgsVL1i1I
A federal judge has blocked the Trump administration from making widespread immigration arrests in D.C. without warrants or probable cause that someone is an imminent flight risk.

Saddened to hear of Mr. Wright's passing. He was a passionate journalist and a kind, compassionate person who loved telling the stories of the people of DC. May his memory be a blessing to his family, friends, and colleagues. https://t.co/YSP8ayEEsu
