I like designing joinery jigs. Not because I want to use these techniques in projects I’m making; but because most joints require undercuts or cuts made from multiple sides (setups). Figuring out how to cut a complex joint on a cnc is a satisfying puzzle.

Hobbes decided he was done with stairs this morning so today’s project became a dog ramp. He’s always hated bridges over creeks, narrow boardwalks and even just random boards lying on the ground so I knew my chances of success were slim…

So, out of a combination of stubbornness and laziness I decided to make a spreadsheet that could generate a 5 Axis cut file based on a series of coordinates snapped from a 3D model rather than actually learn how to use 5 Axis CAM:

Working with 3-axis CNCs for 15+ years has really trained my brain to design things in 2.5D -- so I've never really had much interest in 5 Axis machines because the parts I want to make never require them -- and it is HARD to program a 5 Axis Cut!
