Prediction: TIME SHELTER will come to be seen as a defining book of our age, because it is all about nostalgia for the past and what people will do to return.

Iran used cluster munitions at least 3 times against Israel during the "12 Day War." . It doesn't matter what they were aiming at. It doesn't matter if there were mil targets nearby. Cluster munitions are banned because they are inherently indiscriminate.

Everything goes in cycles, and the industry will eventually produce new products for underserved markets. I am excited to see new imprints like @PanamericaBooks get started. But we're convincing existing readers to go into stores and pick up new books, not to start reading at all.

Those of us in the publishing business would love men to buy more new books. Of course we want half the population to buy our stuff! But if there is nothing they want to read on the New Book Table, they'll go home and pick up the old Krakauer they've been meaning to get to.

A brief thought on the perpetual "men aren't reading" discourse. This article, like most, conflates men buying books with men reading books. Men may not be interested in Reese's latest pick. But they are still reading beat-up paperbacks of Lonesome Dove.

The Russians have moved within artillery and MLRS range of Sumy, a city still full of 100K's of civilians. And we've seen this Russian playbook before, in Kharkiv and Kherson etc - indiscriminate attacks that kill civilians are war crimes.

Yesterday we called on Israel & Iran to respect intl law, noting that ballistic missiles are too inaccurate to use in cities. Today's strike on a hospital shows why. Even if Iran were aiming at a mil target, as claimed, the missiles often miss by 1/2 km.

This is what substitutes now for "communication" between an elected government and its people - instead of Oval Office addresses, they announce major world events via Pentagon pizza orders and leaks that end up on Twitter, if you're paying attention.

It seems unlikely the White House had no inkling this was coming, given the various orders authorizing the removal of non-essential personnel and family members from the region over the past day.

Yes. Change the software I can’t watch my kid’s birthday vids from 2017. Meanwhile we’re still reading tablets from thousands of years ago. As a data storage and knowledge/culture transmission tech, physical text is undefeated.

Just as writing made memorising and reciting redundant, . And printing made scribes redundant, . So video and audio are slowly making writing redundant. As a writer that hurts. But does it matter in the end? . Genuine question.
