WACC is a benchmark for evaluating projects & acquisitions. WACC is also the discount rate for future cash flows when performing a DCF analysis. Investments, projects, & acquisitions should only proceed when the expected return is greater than WACC.

WACC = [(E/V) x Re] + [(D/V) x Rd x (1 - Tc)] E = Market value of the firm’s equity D = Market value of the firm’s debt V = E + D Re = Cost of equity Rd = Cost of debt Tc = Corporate tax rate WACC is a sum of the weighting of each capital source

WACC is the average after-tax expense of capital for a company from all of its sources. This includes common stock, preferred stock, bonds, and other hybrid debt & equity instruments. WACC is the mean rate a company pays to fund its operations.
