An athlete ran 10.7 2 yrs in a row in high school. He goes to college.
He reports training is killing him… it’s long & difficult… I try to reassure this is normal & his coach will likely dial back at some point before competition
The taper never comes
SB of 11.4 this year

It’s mentally and emotionally weighing on him. He’s mentioned giving up the sport several times.
Breaks my heart to see his passion turned into a nightmare.
@BrendanThompsn
This is incredibly unfortunate and happens too often.
How many instances do you think the college coach reaches back out to the HS Coach?? My guess 0
@FloydTrack
In this particular case, I was told the coach has blamed him for his performance decrement.
There are apparently others on the team who share his experience and sentiments.

Sometimes the athletes need to take the reins. Schedule a meeting with the coach. Tell them where they are at. Be transparent, respectful, but persuasive.

Could be the level of competition. Running with leveled athletes could have gotten to his head. I don’t know the kid but I’ve noticed many athletes’ numbers are altered due to environment, not necessarily based on training tactics.
@BrendanThompsn
That has to be incredibly frustrating. Sounds like a coach that is stubborn in his training methods, and doesn't know how to adapt to how different athletes respond. I saw this also. What was great for me, ended up breaking someone else down and their body fell apart.
@BrendanThompsn
Does he have a scholarship? If not, are there club track options? So he can stay at that school and continue his passion…What’s typical for first year college athlete? (Adjustment years or improvement right away?)
