15/ so to conclude, don’t worry if you missed Lilium Weekend last week. unless technology inexplicably reverses direction, it’s going to be Lilium Weekend every weekend for the foreseeable future… Lilium is Here to Stay.

14/ as algorithms become ever more inescapable, i bet that Lilium by Taylor will continue to fascinate people as a study on how complexly beautiful things can emerge from a generative process using inputs that are simple, yet special and unique.

13/ if i had to guess why Lilium has the aesthetic impact that it does, i would say it’s because the underlying building blocks, the 176 features hand-created by @beam_easy, were executed with skill, purpose, and personality.

12/ whether this is a good or bad thing is up for debate, but one thing i’m sure of is that these types of algorithms can only work with what they are given. the quality of the whole is an emergent outcome of its input features

11/ in a sense, a social media feed is also a digital object that is composed from basic components. posts are generated and curated by human beings but then aggregated by complex algorithms to produce a hyperreal, superstimulus gestalt.

10/ this brings to mind the contemporary internet, where, if you spend enough time, it’s hard to escape the creeping realization that the digital world is now largely algorithmically mediated.

9/ this might explain the arresting effect that a Lilium can have on a viewer. we immediately recognize the everyday building blocks, but they are composed together in a way that is hyperreal, i.e. more interesting and stimulating than a real comparable object would be.

8/ if you look closely, you can find features that are layered together in ways that seem slightly unphysical. in fact, it might be impossible to physically recreate a Lilium even if you could perfectly copy the brush strokes because the paint itself would not behave the same way

7/ one of my favorite things about looking at a Lilium is appreciating the rich textures while bearing in mind that this is actually a visual illusion and each layer is (by definition) perfectly flat.

6/ likewise, within the rambunctious and exultant colors of a Lilium, i can also see reflections of how the current environment of technology and data is transforming our world.

5/ as an artistic movement, action painting was self-consciously situated in the societal transformations of the time, drawing its process from newly ascendant ways of understanding the world

4/ the finished compositions are reminiscent of the action painting style that achieved tremendous prominence in the post-WWII period, emphasizing the physicality of painting to bring to surface the psychological and archetypical forces at the heart of creative expression

3/ the fundamental building blocks are a set of paint features physically painted, photographed, and curated by @beam_easy. the resulting 176 features were then transformed into 11,264 possible layers which were algorithmically combined to form each Lilium.
