We started to see some signs of it with the change in his FB/SL shape at the end of last season. Mechanical changes accelerated it. I thought adding a true cutter would help and he did. It takes an extreme aptitude for pitching to make those sort of changes in a calendar year.

I still hold some skepticism of his ceiling, but for the past month and a half i’ve been in favor of him being the favorite to land the last spot in the rotation next year. It’s impressive development he’s answered all of his lingering questions except command.

23 is far from old by any means, but Waldrep being that far along in his development and having to revamp his breaking balls, reshape his fastball, add a cutter, and improve command, that’s a tall task and it’s really why I haven’t been worried about his struggles this season.

I still don’t know if I think Waldrep is fully ready (though given the Braves rotation options, I do think he’s one of the top five) but the progress he’s made this year is really a testament to him and the Braves development.

Waldrep is coming off of a great July with a 0.78 ERA/3.49 FIP in Gwinnett. Last outing was 7 IP, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K.

Kelenic has struggled at Triple-A overall, but put by far his best contact quality on the field in July with an average EV of 90.7 mph and hard hit rate of 50%.

If you’re looking at two names from Triple-A who haven’t debuted and could as starters this season, the top options are JR Ritchie and Brett Sears. Ritchie has been phenomenal now that his FB velo recovered, Sears was a 2025 7th rounder who has gone from A ball to AAA this season.
