On a personal note, today is a pretty big day for me. Six years ago, I was a very lost undergrad who wasn't sure that they would finish a bachelor's degree. I don't think he would believe that this day would ever come. .

Clearly, these cells have a complex behavioural role. Could we have been activating multiple populations to produce different phenotypes? Watch this space for a complete neuroanatomical dissection of these cells (hint, the ZI is topographically organised!!) 🧠.

Additionally, activating these cells augmented several indices of locomotor behaviour, and induced activation of several brain regions associated with fear expression and arousal.

So we chemogenetically activated these cells during conditioned fear extinction, and found something completely unexpected. Half of the chemogenetically activated mice displayed escape-like jumping behaviour (or as our lab likes to call it, the popcorn phenotype) 🍿
