I may ruffle some feathers here but.....Most coaches talk the talk about "multisport" athletes in HS. But the same coaches make it extremely difficult for those athletes to play multiple sports because they think their sport is more important, needs more time, etc

Had a few people ask about our squat progression at our middle school and into 9th grade. Here goes 👇 Body weight, goblet, landmine, zercher, overhead, zombie, front, back. There are some progressions within those progressions.
Weight training in-season WILL NOT make your athletes sore, tired, mess up their shot, take velocity off throws, jump lower or run slower. I hope every HS coach that actually believes these things reads this and has an epiphany
In my experience coaching HS students
Girls - very coachable, highly disciplined, high attn to detail. I spend the most time teaching them to strain
Boys- will strain. I spend the most time teaching them to be coachable, disciplined, and attn to detail
🤷🏽♂️
This isn't grit. Grit is having the mental toughness to persevere thru adversity. This is an embarrassment himself, his team, his University and the game itself
When one of our athletes signs to play a sport in college, we try to set them up for success as soon as they walk in the door.
@JusticeFinkley
has been at Texas 3 weeks (early grad) and he’s in a rack with the upperclassmen and killing it.
@TBecStrength
sent me this Monday. 🤘🏽
My 2 cents on toughness. Toughness is a decision you make. No program makes you tough. Nothing my wife ever went thru prepared her for cancer. She made a decision she was gonna kick cancer's a$% and freaking did it. You wanna be tough? Then be tough. MAKE A CHOICE.
I coached football for 20 yrs both college & HS. Every 1st day of practice, "They're dying. We're not 'in shape'." You can run 20 110's for time, 40 40s, whatever. They're in trouble 1st day. You get in shape by playing the sport. Try to mimick the sport in conditioning
My 7th grade daughter has training with her softball team at 6 a.m. She sets her own alarm to wake up. She makes her own lunch. She knows I will leave her if she doesn't wake up on time (AKA bailing her out). Some people think that's harsh. My daughter will dominate theirs 1 day
"We don't lift heavy in-season. We don't wanna get em tired and sore." Aight. We established 31 new training maxes last week and was up 31-0 with 8 minutes to go in the 2nd quarter but you do you 👌🏼
Core subject teachers think I am dumb and chose to be a “weights coach” because I wasn’t smart enough to teach a real subject.
I say I’m more intelligent than them because I wear shorts to school everyday and don’t have to teach any of that and get paid the same as them
I love it when someone that has never been in a weight room with 50 15-18 year olds tells me what I should and shouldn't do in a weight room with 50 15-18 year olds.
It ain't that easy
I shot this rubber band & it went really far. Then I stretched it & held it repeatedly & shot it again. It went 1/2 the distance. Tell me again why you want to static stretch pregame?
The "sport specific" weight room training arguement gets tiresome. HS kids need strength/power. There is no "football workout" "basketball workout" or "baseball/softball workout" etc. S&C should build stronger, more resilient athletes. Coaches make them better at their sport
At church yesterday. Talking w/ man w/ a 14 yr old son that plays baseball.
"Do you do sport specific training?"
"No."
"Not at all?"
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because I'm not a baseball coach."
"What about in the weight room?"
"Weights don't care what sport you play. Especially at 14"
I'm gonna miss this young man more than y'all know. He's been an absolute workhorse since his freshman year. He's leaving next week to go play
@TexasFootball
(early grad). They're getting a special man. Love you Fink!
People are in disbelief that an "offensive line coach" has Arkansas playing so well. You don't have to be a QB guru to become a HC. Pittman is one of the best coaches in the country - period.
OL coaches - The 🍄 Society
So you can get kicked off a big, open grass field while exercising and only 2 people within 60 yds but you can and are encouraged to go to Walmart and stand in the same aisle as 35 people. Got it
I guess I'm different. I don't shame our athletes about training or not on their Christmas break. Like it or not, they aren't weightlifters. Many don't love training. Maybe if you give them a break during their break, they will be more willing to buy in when they return 🤷♂️

I just dropped my 15 year old son off at school. As he was getting out, I told him "I love you". He didn't say it back but that's ok. Dad's- your boys need to hear those 3 words
Somebody should say it so I guess I will.
Firing the S&C coach citing injuries when coaches are running 3 hour death match practices every week on top of games is complete and utter BS.
"How much did you have on the bar?"
"I had on 30."
"30? The bar is 45"
"I had on 30 on this side."
"So, 105. You had 105 on the bar."
"Yeah"
Conversations with 14 year olds
Hi speed day. We work over the shoulder runs in here. We’re trying to stay at hi speed with as little slow down as possible looking over our shoulder. Then eyes back north and accelerate to separate.
Be athletic
Example of why deload weeks aren’t needed in HS.
School was canceled Fri for weather. Out for MLK Day. Canceled tomorrow for weather. School could possibly be canceled Wed for travel issues.
It’s also an example of why attendance is the most important metric in HS training.
"Besides school workouts, he's going to_____for extra lifting,____for footwork,& _____sport work. We put in an entire gym in our basement. We have 37 camps planned."Is there anything else we can do?"
"What time did go to bed last night?& what he eat for breakfast?"
SILENCE
Your spine is not fragile.unless you treat it that way. Find time and opportunities to explore rotation and expose your spine to movements outside of traditional loading patterns for longevity.

Unpopular opinion: spring football practice, summer baseball/basketball practice should be eliminated from HS athletics. Would eliminate a major stressor on multisport athletes and encourage more participation. I'm prepared to get blasted here.

Sport coaches:
The height of the box is irrelevant. How high does the center of mass travel? That’s all that matters.
Red line is 7th line on the wall.
Reduce risks
Don't you love it when you post a pic or video and the technique police come out and pick it apart? It's called coaching. If they did everything right I wouldn't have a job.
Overheard behind me last night:
"Is that one of the coaches?"
"Nah. He's just the weights guy."
I'm going to make that my new title. Brandon Herring - The Weights Guy
I wonder how much this bothers the anti-juice, cancel coaches. These men work their tails off, yell, scream, flex, train at 5 a.m., and have rap concerts in the weight room.
They also WIN and serve our country in places that most Americans would never voluntarily visit. Salute
S&C coaches don't want sport coaches giving input in training.
Sport coaches don't want S&C coaches giving input to sports training.
The athletes thrive when both sides come together, drop ego's, and collaborate.
Communication is the 🔑
Short thread to debunk the "I don't want them to lift heavy in-season. I need them fresh. Let's lift light and maintain" idea that many sport coaches have been led to believe. It's passed down generationally. Intensity or "heavy", doesn't make you tired. VOLUME does. 1/3
Coaches: when young men are arguementative (disrespectful? maybe), the majority of the time it's due to insecurity. So putting them on blast in front of their boys just feeds that insecurity. It took me a loooong time to realize that. Pull them to the side. Way better results
Most football HC's make the OC/DC hire the priority in their program. Most also say "players win games, not play calls". Which is it? S&C coach should be a major priority. If the sword isn't sharp, you won't win the fight. And for the record, I've been a HC, OC, and S&C coach.
People often ask me if I miss coaching college football. In many ways I do, but I just ate breakfast with my daughter on her 1st day of middle school. I'm good. 👍
Most of the time Twitter world shows you all the beautiful things. There's ugly in every weight room. But that's why we coach right? Here's the good, the bad, and the ugly. I ain't scared.
I believe my job as a HS S&C coach is to help kids master movement, not to chase numbers. You can't take calculus before you take Alg 1. Maybe I'm different......
Conditioning never gets much love on here but I like it so here it is.
30 seconds on 30 seconds off. 4 reps at each station. 3 sets through each.
“Coach, what we did was easy but it sucked.” 😂
@timkettenring
Sport coaches talk about how games are won in the offseason.
However, many will come in the weight room & stand around talking to one another, or on their phone, or having convos with players.
What if the S&C coach came to practice and did that?
But let’s harp on discipline…
You know your S&C program is taking hold when your football coaches don't have veins popping out of their heads when you take a 4 minute rest between reps during sprint training.
“We’re just a small school. We can’t do all the stuff you do.”
1- you have a phone. Get an app and time max v.
2- there’s a hill somewhere near you. It’s 1 of the best tools for accel.
3- you have grass. All you need to change directions
4- you have a weight room
“Yes you can”
I've seen alot of S&C guys mocking the # of Zoom clinics going on. But, for many HS coaches, especially sport coaches that run their own training, that is a great thing. Knowledge is needed. Just because you feel like it's redundant doesn't mean someone else isn't learning
