the mavericks finish the preseason 3-1, which means everyone is super happy and satisfied heading into the season-opener right?

you don't normally play a zone defense to help against threes, but the mavs are big, long, and don't have great guard defense. keeping players in front of them and limiting blow bys (thus limiting rotations) can stabilize their defense.

mavs played some zone in the first quarter, which might seem counterintuitive, since traditionally zone is what you go to when you're surrendering paint points/undersized. but for the mavs it helped their POA defense to cut off the lakers drive-and-kick attack, limit their threes

I don't care as much as other people about the AD at the four/five conversation (I just care that he runs back on defense and doesn't shoot a ton of jumpers) but it is funny the mavericks immediately ripped off a 13-0 run in the first stretch of AD at the five minutes.

preseason probably not the best time for a rant, but I think I have one ready for the podcast tonight, as I watch the mavericks effort level improve significantly versus the previous game.

being big definitely helps on the boards, but when a decent chunk of the misses in a game are bouncing out to the three point line, size doesn't always matter.

the rebounding numbers for the mavs this season are going to be interesting. theoretically the bigger team should get the rebounds, but considering how many teams shoot threes now, and how long those rebounds are, just being big isn't good enough to be a good rebounding team.

none of this really matters, but after the starters got waxed through three quarters, the backups also getting waxed in the fourth quarter is slightly dispiriting. won't be a fun film session coming out of this one.

you don't always need to put the ball on a string when picked up full-court, sometimes you just need strength and a wide frame to body the defender across halfcourt and get into your set at your own tempo.
