Smaller cousin, smaller stink; one of our Amorphophallus konjacs, also known as devil's tongue, has opened at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney. You'll find it near the millennium cherry blossoms. This flower is delicate during bloom so please look and smell, but don't touch.

Our misty plume bushes (Tetradenia riparia) are now encrusted with jewel-like lilac and white blooms. Look a little closer and you'll see they're also completely covered in bees zooming around the fluffy inflorescence. You can see these growing at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney.

Rainbow lorikeets know what time it is when the millennium cherry trees bloom!. These trees were specially bred to adapt to Sydney's warm climate, which means they flower a little earlier than our other cherry blossoms.

The brilliant reds of the poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) are associated with Christmas time, but these plants come into bloom during winter in Australia. You can see this gorgeous Mexican plant in its natural cycle in the Middle Gardens of the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney.

Snowflake shrubs (Euphorbia leucocephala) grow angelic modified leaves (bracts) that create a pure-white display. Admire this species at the Lion Gate Lodge at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney. Just beware, like many members of the genus its sap can be toxic if ingested.

The light in winter just glows through the trees and across the harbour. ez.field.notes on Instagram captured these beautiful stills of the Harbour Lawn at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney; the figs, palms and orchid tree shine in the afternoon sun.

This month we saw the vibrant green leaves of our Ginkgo bilobas turn to gold as the chill of winter fully kicked in. Now Peak Golden Ginkgo time has drawn to a close. There's till plenty to look forward to this winter with camellias and wattles now taking full bloom.

The bright pink flowers of the Hong Kong Orchid Tree (Bauhinia × blakeana) are one of Paul's favourites in winter. When the weather turns chilly this tree produces stunning pink florals on the Band Lawn in the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney.

Local photographer James Tran paid our golden ginkgos a visit in the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney. He describes the vibrant leaves as little cornflakes - well, we certainly agree they look crunchy enough to eat. Have you walked the yellow carpet yet?. 📸Instagram: @jamtuna

Once a common species, the native guava tree (Rhodomyrtus psidioides) has now been almost completely destroyed in the wild by the deadly myrtle rust. Our scientists and horticulturalists are working together at the Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan in an effort to save it.
