Besides its golden color, the Salamandra Aurea also posses a tail in the shape of a head, complete with two dark spots for eyes, to confuse predators. It is also quite feisty, many times preferring to fight instead of fleeing. Which one could argue only makes it look adorable.

I really like the idea of selective disadvantage. The concept that sexual selection can lead to apparently physical disadvantages to attract possible mates and how that might indicate how strong an individual is to survive with them.

I'm a sucker for underwater photos. You have the alieness of water creatures combined with the lack of weight that makes them float like if they were in space. It's just amazing. I've been trying to recreate that feeling for a long long time.

Every now and then I have the need to draw something on the cutter side. And I think this little guy is proof of that. I gave him that puppy play fighting posture. There's something about a tiny creature acting tough that just melts my ice cold heart!

It took me about half an year to finish this painting. I didn't rush, I was involved in every single pixel of it. It was challenging, frustrating and extremely gratifying. I can't imagine how sad it would be for a creator to not enjoy the act of creating. It's heartbreaking.

The more I see about AI art the sadder I get. Not because I fear losing my job, I would need to have one to lose it! The thing is that I think it misses the most important part, that it is fun to paint! It's so much fun and you're missing out on it. That makes me sad.

Fishes were definitely bigger back in the old days... Don't get me wrong, I love progress, but we really messed up the environment. I wonder if we ended up killing all the river kings or if some are still alive and well hiding somewhere, waiting and growing bigger.

I love those national geographic style pictures of animals. I always end up painting my creatures in that style. I know it isn't exactly dynamic and exciting, but this is so deeply ingrained in my DNA that it's almost impossible to avoid it.

The main part of my work is done with values. I know it sounds like old advice, but fundamentals are simply that, fundamental. Shape, values and edges. If these 3 things are off the whole painting is off.

Look at this little stinker! So, the inspiration for this one came from the classical story of Diogenes trolling Plato with his featherless biped. I wanted to keep some of this sarcasm into the creature I was creating.

I can't breathe through my mouth. I mean, I physically can, but I feel like I'm drowning. So this is exactly how I feel when my nose gets congested. It's the worst torture you can do to me. A salute to my fellow nose breathers!

This little guy was one of the first time that I had ever felt in control of my painting. Don't get me wrong, I struggled a lot, and still do, but after years and years of fighting against my paintings I was able to enjoy it. It's a mental state more than actual control.

Lots of people ask me where do I get inspiration from to imagine my weird creatures. Nature, that's where. There are so many amazing and incredible animals and things they do. The big inspiration behind this painting is a little thing named Cochliomyia hominivorax. Terrifying.

I still like my version of the beholder. I prefer it to be a round weird flying creature than just a floating head. I mean, sure it is an impossible creature, but I think it feels a little more realistic as a round bodied creature.

Had a rough week so I've painted myself a little friend. It took me about 2 hours to get this much done, but I wasn't trying to be fast. After a while you get faster naturally, so take your time for now. Don't rush, just paint and have fun!

This is still one of my favorites. I took the time to get the lighting and the rendering exactly as I wanted for this one. The depth of field, the foreground rocks. I think it was the best that I could do at that time and it still holds its ground!
