We had a celebration for John Prausnitz yesterday at UC Berkeley and his remarkable contributions to Chemical Engineering. He and his wonderful family (also attending) are kindly endowing a seminar series in the department. Was able to meet some of the other legends too.

Last stop in Europe was the incredible EPFL, hosted by (group alumni!) Dr. Qiucheng Xu and Prof Xile Hu. Saw so many old friends, along with meeting electrochemistry legends Hubert Girault and Michael Grätzel. Lausanne is an remarkable - only wish I had time for a swim.

Leiden is beautiful and with a deep science history, where helium was first liquefied. Also was able to catch Dr Haokun Chen at his job at Brineworks building bipolar membrane elctrolyzers

External "opponent" for PhD defense of Onno van der Heijden promoted by Marc Koper. The Dutch traditions at the defense and ceremony are wonderful. Leiden is a spectacular small city with the intact old architecture still dominating a garden like center built around the canals.

First stop for a quick summer work trip in Europe was at the EMEA conference in Bad Zwischenahn. This is one of the premier gatherings of scientists working on ionomer membranes that are polymer ion conductors for energy conversion devices in electrolysis and fuel cells.

If geologic H2 becomes a reality, it will be a good thing for CO2 emissions free energy and provide more momentum to building out H2 infrastructure. H2 from renewables + electrolysis will be cheaper ultimately, but this could be an important step.

Wonderful to visit Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory hosted by An Chu and Chris Hahn. No photo allowed on site, so here is one from lunch. Lots of excellent echem technology work at LLNL. Advanced Manufacturing Laboratory and National Ignition Facility v. impressive.

We visited the famous PARC near Stanford for our DARPA Excursion 6-month meeting and ran into a famous electrochemist!

Proud of the undergraduates earning their degrees. Nadia and Caitlyn are graduating from Honors College, defended outstanding theses on their excellent electrochemistry research, excelled in full suite of @OregonEChem graduate courses and are off to internships + a bright future.

One of the newest Boettcher group students Jihan Zhang joined me for the trip up to spend some time learning how to make AEMWE electrodes from Tingting Zhang. We enjoyed Mt. Shasta views, though hard to see here.

Congratulations to the latest Boettcher PhD - Dr. Olivia Vulpin! Olivia figured out how to make mechanically robust advanced BPMs and has started Nuwohm to manufacture and sell them worldwide!

Paul Kempler came up with the "Koutecky Derby" competition, which is so cool for us electrochemistry nerds!.

Congrats to Dr. Kira Thurman! Kira was joint student with Prof. Paul Kempler who launched a new project on our team looking at interfacial ion transfer kinetics in well-defined model surfaces.
