Thanks for the compliment! This was SUCH a fun project to work on, and we're super happy with how it turned out.
If you're interested in linguistic synesthesia, this is the book for you! From start to finish, it's an incredibly ambitious and comprehensive project, and one of the most exciting works I have read in a long time. @BodoWinter Francesca Strik-Lievers

New experiment out in JASA showing that trilled [r] is matched to a rough/jagged shape in 28 languages. Languages with trilled [r] as primary variant show a dampened effect. We discuss implications for the role of acoustics vis-a-vis articulation in sound symbolism.

... can also be triggered via gesture, and that this has a real effect on perceivers. We are currently in the process of following up on these experiments by testing different quantifiers, including looking how semantic factors such as monotonicity interact with gesture. ⬇️

This study serves as a proof-of-concept to demonstrate the effect of gesture on the comprehension of quantifiers. It shows that the cognitive association between spatial extent and quantity we know from extensive research on spatial-numerical associations... ⬇️

We replicated this basic pattern of results in two follow-up experiments. These within-subjects experiments also show that people are quite consistent, with the overwhelming majority of participants demonstrating the effect in the predicted direction. ⬇️

Results showed that outwards gestures led to higher estimates, and inward gestures to lower estimates. In a continuous analysis, wider pixel distance between the hands translated into bigger numerical estimates. ⬇️

Videos showed speakers saying things like "400 people were at the protest… several of them got arrested" while simultaneously gesturing outwards (hands moving away from torso) or inwards, or with no gesture. Then we asked: "Guess how many of the 400 people got arrested?" ⬇️

We now wanted to experimentally demonstrate that these gestures matter. Do they influence what numbers people have in mind? To test this, we picked the quantifier "several" as a first foray into this topic (see paper for why this one). ⬇️

Our previous multimodal corpus research (led by @greg_woodin) showed that size-related gestures are very common when people talk about quantities, such as the precision grip gesture you see here. https://t.co/PeBIq2dYRy ⬇️

Very proud of this research on how viewing angle (side, front, etc) impacts BSL comprehension. Excellent work by the whole team (@BodoWinter, Diar Abdlkarim) but most of the credit needs to go to the fabulous @freya_watkins_ Open access link:
