My final comments on the campaign. I love this City. I was born here, went to school here, raised a family here and was blessed to serve this community. It's the people that make this City the envy of all others. That's why I am convinced Ottawa has a very bright future ahead.

Congrats to mayor-elect @_MarkSutcliffe. You ran a great campaign @cmckenney. I hope we haven't seen the last of you in politics. All the best to all the winners tonight and to those brave enough to put their name on the ballot.

Thank you to @cmckenney and @Bob_Chiarelli and @_MarkSutcliffe for putting fwd their visions for Ottawa. This has been a good debate, but whoever wins please reach out to the others. Good ideas are good, no matter who put them fwd.

A few thoughts going into the election. Settle in, this is a long thread: The Ottawa Citizen in one breath dismisses my candidacy, reasoning that our austerity message didn't catch on in this government town. In another breath it warns of a coming recession. 1/13

When the voters of Ottawa go to mark their ballot, please remember that I have made only one financial promise: I will not raise taxes in the first year of my term to give my administration the time to put this City back on a solid financial footing. 13/13

freezing bus fares for four years that will cost the treasury more than $25 million in lost revenue to name just a few financial foibles that will put the City into an even deeper financial crisis. 12/13

And there’s Mr. Sutcliffe’s promises to build a Market police station & hire more officers without any price tag, his missing $115M to account for inflation . . . 11/13

We can’t afford Catherine McKenney’s promises of longer hours for beaches and outdoor pools, spending $250 million in borrowed money over four years for bike paths, raiding reserves, freezing transit fares and extending free transit to those under 18 years of age. 10/13

It is clear, says Jones, that the City needs to get back to delivering core services ahead of all else. With a solid foundation, the City can then work at delivering those nice-to-haves we all want to enjoy. 9/13

In his view, the critical challenge facing the City of Ottawa for the foreseeable future is to get the books balanced. To that end, he says, he agrees with my call for a tax and spending freeze in the first year of the new mandate. 8/13

It became clear that I needed to bring to bear the insight and perspectives of an outside financial expert to bring some sense to numbers that didn’t add up. 6/13

I have spent considerable time over the past while with my campaign advisors examining opponents' financial plans and despite our best efforts, we could not arrive at a scenario where their pledges wouldn’t add tens of millions more to the already out of control debt. 5/13

The light rail & bus system is in tatters, roads are in ruin, the core and ByWard Market need reviving, City buildings are in disrepair, & on & on & on. I have become more & more concerned as this campaign has progressed with the spending promises of my 2 main opponents. 4/13

become mired in debt or more simply put, has pushed the City to the brink of bankruptcy. The City’s debt has skyrocketed almost 10-fold since I left office in 2006 to nearly $4 billion & the interest payments have more than quadrupled in that time to > $350M annually. 3/13

That is what is referred to as talking out of both sides of your mouth, a skill @_MarkSutcliffe has mastered in his short time in the political ring. I could have taken the easy route in this campaign & promised unicorns and rainbows but that’s how the City has . . . 2/13
