I do consider Robert E. Lee to be one of the greatest Americans to have ever lived. A Christian gentleman with excellent moral standards, and a brave soldier. I also consider him to be the greatest general in American history.
In March of 1870 General Lee and John Mosby had a chance encounter with each other in Richmond. Mosby told George Pickett that he'd just met with Lee, and so Pickett also wanted to meet with Lee, and "pay his respects".

Lee was perhaps the closest to a man of perfect virtue that we have ever seen, judging by accounts from his friends, allies, and enemies alike.
