#IAT - collecting, processing, and reinfusing a patient’s own blood during a procedure - is traditionally cost and resource-prohibitive. This device, developed/tested by teams at @dukerala and @OffCMCVellore, costs <$12 USD to make and can collect two 350ml bags in <3.5 minutes

Members of the BDC were recently awarded first prize in innovation at the International Congress on Innovations in Global Surgery #ICIGS2025 in Malawi, for their cost-effective intraoperative autotransfusion (IAT) device with potential to conserve blood in low-resource settings!

Per the authors, the study emphasizes the need to pursue interventions aimed at improving #bloodtransfusion access and addressing factors like rurality, geographic barriers, and limited resources hindering blood delivery in economically disadvantaged areas like India’s EAG states

The authors found only 61% of EAG states’ population had access to blood-equipped facilities within an hour. Blood availability rates (0.6 units per 1000 people) were well below standards by the @TheLancet Commission, the @WHO, and estimated need in India specifically (38/1000)
