Hey folks! Thrilled to have my first postdoc paper out with the amazing @CarasLab out today in @CurrentBiology. Also with a ton of help from Dr. Lashaka Hamlette (X-less). Please keep reading for some quick highlights of our findings.

Our results suggest that OFC plays a key role in how auditory context is processed, impacting how meaningful sounds are perceived at a neural and behavioral level

2. OFC inactivation messes up context-related information in auditory cortex, and makes animals really bad at detecting sounds

Using a combination of freely-moving neural recordings (electrophysiology and fiber photometry) and pharmacology, we found two key results.

We trained gerbils to perform an auditory detection task. Then, we could manipulate their context by removing task items and playing the same sounds of the task, now without any relevance to them.

We tested this idea in Mongolian gerbils, because they are cute (jk, but they are), smart (i.e., easy to train) and with hearing range similar to us humans.

The OFC also happens to have strong connections with the auditory cortex. For these reasons, we wondered if OFC could be mediating the context information arriving in auditory cortex.

There is a region in our frontal cortex involved in regulating attention, learning and emotions, called the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC among friends). If you've ever heard of Phineas Gage, his OFC (among other areas) was damaged, resulting in bad emotional regulation ability

We already knew that context affects how sounds are processed in the auditory brain, but there was a gap in our understanding of HOW context information reached our auditory brain

Auditory attention can adapt to internal or external context. For example, the sound of a door slamming can mean VERY different in a busy coffee shop versus when we are home alone at night
