Friends,
@ewarren
laid out a comprehensive plan to PARTNER with Native communities. Her plan is revolutionary because it shows she (or her people) understands the depth of the relationship between the & Native governments better than any other presidential candidate maybe ever.
This is an coming of age moment for liberal, white America:
This is 100% who America has always been. This is what you have always ignored & been complicit in.
Let it sting.
This ain’t new. Native & Black folk have felt this for centuries.
Now stop crying. Do something. You.
Warren’s proposed Oliphant Fix is probably the single most important piece of legislation for Natives in recent memory. Native communities are ravaged by non-Natives who commit serious crimes against us. Her proposal would fix that. Huge. Allow us to protect our communities.
They are trying to bully Native people out of telling our stories.
Don’t let them.
Believe what you see. We all seen what happened. Don’t bend over backwards to doubt our stories & believe theirs, no matter how unbelievable.
Believe what you see.
When white people feel under attack, even if it’s a cyberattack, it’s front page news.
When Brown & Black people are under attack, even if it’s for hundreds of years & it’s with guns by people employed by the state like cops or teachers or the Army, it’s being too sensitive.
@ewarren
Specifically,
@ewarren
proposed a CABINET LEVEL WHITE HOUSE POSITION for Native affairs. That is huge. It is appropriate. It is important to note that she is continuing the work of President Obama to have regular contact with Native nations instead of only special ocassions.
Facts:
-Natives are victims of violent crime more than any other ethnic group in the US.
-Non-Natives commit most violent crimes against Natives.
-Police kill Natives at the highest rate in the US.
-We are under-protected yet still somehow over-policed.
Defund the police.
Nothing. The Black Israelites are a small group of disempowered individuals who don't own a building & have done us no historical harm. Why respond? There are billion dollar white religions that hate Natives & have enslaved us & committed genocide. I'd much rather focus on those.
@BigIndianGyasi
What is your response to the black Israelites movement who were harassing natives saying "you prayed to the wrong God that's why they took your land" what about the afrocentric culture vultures trying to hijack native history?
People can & should judge candidates by whatever criteria they feel appropriate. But coming from a Native person who lives on Reservation & who daily sees the effects of crime on reservations, our communities will be MUCH safer with
@ewarren
policies than anyone else’s.
You all act like Native people are chicken little when we talk about about harms that these oil pipelines inevitably...history unfortunately shows

Happy Black History Month.
American history does not exist without Black history. Black History created the ridiculous economy & 1st World Amenities we enjoy.
To Blendians (Natives/Black mixes), you come from the strongest & most adaptable mix in the world. Celebrate yourself.
Now the white kids are asserting their white innocence & everybody is sucking it up.
Why? It’s an easy narrative. “I didn’t know what was happening.” Works for white people. Does not work for Brown & Black people.
@ewarren
No
@ewarren
plan is not perfect, because it's probably impossible to have "perfect" at this juncture of colonial history. That said, it is evidence she is fundamentally rethinking the relationship between Native nations & the US to a partnership instead of throwing some bones.
Folks think Natives are just spooky/enviroed-out on some spiritual isht, "These pipelines offend the Great Spirit." No, stupid. These pipelines spill and kill shit. Every single one of them. We've seen them. Listen to us.
#KeystonePipeline
#Indigenous
@ewarren
I'm going to write more on
@ewarren
plan to partner with Native communities soon. She HAD to come with the goods in order to have a meaningful shot within Native communities. She came with the goods. Again, it's not perfect, but damn it's pretty damn great.
#Indigenous
Salute.
By the way, I AM Native & I AM Black.
Both.
How much? 100% of both. All.
Some of you witnessed some of the weird/ugly insecurity that Native & Black people sometimes face.
You have every right to be both. You don’t have to make a choice. Love 100% of you & your ancestors.
@ewarren
I am particularly excited about
@Ewarren
notion of funding infrastructure within Native communities. Native Nations have NEVER been appropriately funded to created the environment for our nations to thrive! The US has to address its horrible past before we can properly BUILD.
Don’t fall in the trap of saying the Black people executed by the police “weren’t doing anything wrong.”
Who cares if they were? I promise none of these people were accused of a capital offense. That’s why there’s a legal process. We do not need to be angels to not be executed.
Being Native means that the words “step-brother,” “step-Sister,” “half-brother” or “half-Sister” or “2nd cousin” do not exist in your vocabulary.
They are your sisters and brothers and cousins or they are not. Period. There are no halfs, steps or degrees.

Non-Native friends, this is something many Native Nations see as a priority-that a Native person head up the Dept. of the Interior ("DOI") because DOI handles an inordinate amount of matters w/ Natives.
This is something you should support post-election.
Can we all kindly thank Black people for creating this mood & movement of revolution in the United States, defunding police & tearing down monuments & whatnot?
Hell, Mt. Rushmore might be the next one to go at this rate 🔥🔥🔥🔥—this Black revolutionary zeal is contagious.
Happy Native American Heritage Month.
Learn something.
Utilize this opportunity. There's a lot of FREE info about Native people & Nations floating around right now.
Learn something. Follow some Native people. Get different views from amongst Native people.
Learn something.
2020 doesn't suck.
2020 isn't the worst.
What's going on is 100% a reflection of who we are & the awful way we treat each other.
The year is only a mirror. 2020 doesn't suck; we do.
Until we learn to treat each other with kindness & dignity, each year will SEEM TO be worse.
I could definitely rock with
@ewarren
&
@JulianCastro
as the ticket in 2020. I could see that. In whichever order, just for the record.
That's something I can definitely get behind...the ideals are there.
Gmorning folks. What do you all think of that possible tandem?
Not everyone cares who has the strongest plan for Native Nations-folks have different criteria. But IF that matters to you, vote for
@ewarren
on
#SuperTuesday2020
.
Her plan to re-empower & protect Native communities is the best of all the Democratic candidates. It's not close.
White liberal friends stop saying that separating children from their parents is “unAmerican.” That is ahistorical & insensitive as hell to the 100ks of Native people who were separated from their children by official US policy from boarding schools & the Indian Adoption Project.
The Jussie Smollett Story is the new OJ Simpson Story: it’s an opportunity for White/White-coded folks to speak badly about Black folks & disguise it as angst directed at the legal system.
Watch what they say about him: they’re really saying those things about all Black people.
Hey-simple (but specific) request:
Can you do me a favor & call your Senators TOMORROW, whoever your Senators are, & tell them they NEED to vote to confirm Deb Haaland for Secretary of Interior?
Some racist assholes are trying to stall her out. They need to know youre watching.
Every time I speak, well-meaning non-Natives ask “I’m sorry that your people had so much stolen from them. What can we do?”
The theft is still happening-it is NOT ancient history.

If 30 Black youth wearing

shirts surrounded a sweet little old white lady & were jumping & screaming & chanting at her and one particular Black youth stood face to face with her while adult members of the Nation of Islam looked on, the National guard would have been there.
Being a Native man with a black grandfather, I always thought my hope that Natives & Black folk work together to materially benefit our communities was selfish, just an affirmation of identity.
I now realize it’s not: it’s necessary. It makes sense. Let’s work together.
Tenderhearted White Friends: this is EXACTLY “who we are”; destroying Brown & Black families is 100% the American way. Don’t ever be confused. Let’s do better, let’s advocate, but let’s also recognize that this is the very core of who America is.

For those who are younger than me, I don’t know when people stopped having clotheslines, but it happened during my lifetime. But this is what they look like & pretty much everyone used to have one. You had serious bread if you had a dryer.
RIP the clothesline
My niece tried to kill herself the other day. She was serious. She’s 21, LOVED, college bball career.
I have no answers. I know our moments of pain feel like they will last forever. I also know those moments DO HURT but WILL pass.
Stick around please. We love you.

Lies About Natives I Commonly Read/Hear:
1) Natives don't pay taxes. I WISH we didn't pay taxes. Legally, we SHOULDN'T pay taxes. That sucks. So do you if you repeat this lie.
2) Natives received reparations. Anyone who repeats this has no clue what reparations are. Dumb face.
The saddest thing about
@ewarren
dropping out is no one will never examine just how profoundly sexism doomed her prospects. Case study. We’re gonna name a bunch of things as why she never really got off the ground but will never name the biggest factor: she’s an outspoken woman.
I know my white liberal friends would love to BELIEVE separating children from their parents is UnAmerican. It is not. Hundreds of thousands of Native kids stolen as a matter of American policy. So many Native kids stolen Congress HAD to pass a law, the Indian Child Welfare Act.
Repeat This With Me:
Calling white people "white people" is not "reverse racism" (and reverse racism doesn't exist).
Calling white people "white people" is not "reverse racism" (and reverse racism doesn't exist).
Yknow, you can still celebrate, support & honor Native people today too, right? It doesn't HAVE to be one day a year...go follow some dope ass Native people today.
There's lots.
Absolutely.
@ewarren
pulled a weirdo move with the DNA that was incredibly made for
@TheMAURYShow
However I believe I‘m supposed to prioritize the future & health of Native communities over my own personal past grievances. Her plans & vision makes Native communities healthiest.
@BigIndianGyasi
@ewarren
And, in case folks have forgotten (I haven’t), Gyasi was tougher on her in re: the DNA squabble and all than just about anyone.
Native people could not lawfully conduct spiritual practices until 1978 because of America's tyranny of Christianity. It literally took an act of Congress, the American Indian Religious Freedom Act, to ensure we would not go to jail for praying.
#Indigenous
#ReligiousFreedomDay
RBG's legal legacy is a case study in how we human beings are complicated creatures with the power to create AND destroy.
RBG is simultaneously responsible for one of the more destructive & racist anti-Native opinions in recent times but also did so much good work.
Complicated.
It’s hard to express to non-Natives & Natives who don’t live on Reservation how disempowering/hopeless it feels to not be able to protect your community, to know criminals WILL do awful things & get away with it guaranteed.
@ewarren
proposal changes that, immediately.

for pushing for a Native & Black person to give a unique perspective.
Ok, we’ve kinda exhausted Blackface the past couple of days. It’s wrong, racist & unfortunately (& surprisingly) still happening. A lot.
Here’s a question: all you who commented & were outraged by Blackface—Why not the same level of outrage when you see someone “playing Indian?”
Since the Oliphant case, non-Natives have committed so many murders, rapes, sold so many drugs on Reservation land & gotten off Scott free. I literally see it every single day.
@ewarren
proposed Oliphant Fix, would change that & fundamentally change our communities’ health.
I’m blocking all white folk who think it’s somehow not racist to whitesplain to ANY Native people why your perspective on Native identity is more correct than that Native’s perspective.
No discussion. You’re racist & wrong & I don’t have the time.
I have kids to raise, dammit.
Don’t Be Confused: Trump did not attack Elizabeth Warren. He equated Warren with a real historical figure who was of noble lineage-I don’t see how that’s a slight to Warren. No Trump attacked Pocahontas’ family, ALL Natives & the Native warriors who were standing in front of him.
Many Natives, up until a week ago, had no interest in Indigenous/Black solidarity. Now it looks good. And many of us will still take that—come get on the right side, fam! About time. But make sure you keep that same energy for Black Natives you’ve ignored, marginalized & mocked.
She's gonna get trashed for the next couple of months & is far from perfect & has history most have issues with...I get it. This is 2020. No one is gonna be happy.
But do you realize how tough & brilliant & bad a Black woman has to be to get selected as Vice-President?
Salute.
Pray for the Navajo Nation, the Pueblos & in fact all Native reservations. This pandemic exacerbates already existing inequities. If you can send some money, send some money, but at least focus your thoughts on Native communities for a moment today.
#Indigenous
The coronavirus is tearing across the largest Native American reservation in the U.S. Faced with a spike in deaths from what the tribal health department calls Dikos Ntsaaígíí-19 — or Covid-19 — Navajo officials are rushing to respond.
Delicate white friends,
I know it seems the world is going to hell & you can’t believe the ugliness that you’re seeing. It’s unAmerican to you.
I promise you: It’s always been here. You’re seeing the G rated version. Legal genocide & slavery wasn’t long ago.
We can recover.
I remember my parents’ look of frustration & desperation around Xmas. Being broke, wanting to provide the toys/clothes their kids wanted, but knowing it was LITERALLY heat or gifts...
To everyone struggling with this time of year, please breathe & take it easy on yourself.
What are you talking about? Separating kids from their families is American as Apple Pie. 100K Native Native kids were stolen to attend boarding schools. Including my grandpa. Then a federal program called Indian Adoption Project stole OVER a 100k Native kids from their families.
I am sorry that the Trump Administration has created a vicious policy where parents are told their children are being taken to showers and never return.
Such inhumanity is un-American. You can quote me on that.
Family, Native & Black people are joined by lots of history, by lots of blood & by lots of resistance. Don’t ever get that twisted & don’t ever give in to that evil, white supremacist urge to compete for the white man’s gaze. No one wins the oppression olympics, I promise.
I believe in people of color even tho I know “people of color” is a made-up term with no real tie that binds. Most people of color cannot fathom how invisible Native people are. Most people of color have immense unchecked anti-Blackness within their communities.
Still I believe.
“Woke” white people tend to spend most of their “Woke” time explaining to people of color why/how they’re not “those” kind of white peoples instead of explaining to “those” kind of white people why it is necessary to support people of color.
Let’s Be Clear: I 100% WISH Natives did get reparations. Just like I wish Natives didn’t pay taxes & got free school from the US & other myths & misinformation these idiots spread.
But the US hasn’t even begun to repay the CONTRACTUAL debt it owes Natives, much less reparation.

It's an important 1st step. Keep pushing further.
So my white friends...this “white people dressing in Blackface” shit is really a thing?? That y’all just...do???

I honestly didn’t realize it was a thing.
Is it the same neurosis that causes so many white folks love to dress up like Natives?
Serious questions.
Shout out to the city of

NC for modeling how to start the conversation about reparations in a practical way. It’s not a panacea, it’s not going to fix everything, but intent counts & effort matters & trying is beautiful. Thank you for trying to make things right.
I think I can answer this question: he stabbed a Black woman because he is a racist, murdering piece of feces who was emboldened by 400 years of devaluing Black lives & allowing white people who attack Black & Brown people to do so with complete impunity.
@CNN
Some idiot said, "You're distracting from the children on the border when you point out Native people were also separated from their children."
Huh? What?? I have this weird belief that we can NOT erase Native history AND advocate for humane treatment of others at the same time.
When celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day, remember many Native people don't fit archetypes of what Native people "should" look like.
There are us Natives who are blessed to be mixed with African ancestry. There are also many with white ancestry.
ALL shades & tints. All Native.

For Black History Month I acknowledge the omnipresence of Black culture in Native lives.
From Native hiphop, to Native civil rights movements (Red Power, Native Lives Matter, etc), slang, Black culture continues to influence & inform Natives, often w/out attribution.
Thank you.

How many Native people are ACTIVE on Twitter? It SEEMS like it's less than Instagram & Facebook. Those seem to preferred social medias for Natives.
Roll call: What nation are you? Rez/urban? Enrolled? Does enrollment matter?
Blackfeet. Kinda rez, kinda urban. Enrolled. No.
Natives/Reparation For Dummies:
You want cable. A company agrees to provide cable for $100 a month.
You pay faithfully but they don’t provide cable for 300 years. 300 years later you get cable! Yayy!
That’s not reparations. That’s just them FINALLY doing what they agreed to.
I schooled you all yesterday: No, Native people never received reparations.
Native reparations are actually currently impossible because the US is currently violating the agreements it made with Natives.
You cannot “repair” a relationship while still actively violating it.
Shout to everyone, of every ethnicity, tribe, National origin & creed, who chooses to celebrate their benefactors here on Turtle Island, Native people, instead of a pedophile.
Understand: Natives have much to offer on the other 364 days of the year as well.
#IndigenousPeoplesDay
I inherited cycles of drug/drink addiction, physical abuse & poverty. Scarring. That's why I never drank alcohol once in my life or did any drugs or contemplated abusive relationships.
Many of my friends were born in exactly the same thing & ended those cycles. Powerful fathers.
You know a knife discovered after-the-fact in the car OR on his person would not be relevant to establish probable cause, right?
Couldn't be.
It's a non-issue. It's stupid in real life, but legally it's a non-issue.
Stop stretching to try to justify; you're not that flexible.
Natives only became Americans in 1924. We were the last ones to become “real Americans” because of racism; many Native nations didnt want to be “Americans” because we predate America by 10,000s of years & that name comes from a white dude just a few hundred years ago = not us.
Shout out to Queen
@TiffanyDCross
for examining reparations with detail & acknowledging Native people in the US have never received any “reparations” via lawsuit settlements in the same way that Black farmers never received “reparations” for lawsuit settlements.
Salute!
On Monuments: I honestly don't know if we ever need another statue dedicated to a human being. A hero ain't nothing but a sandwich-every single one of us is unworthy of worship or idolatry. It's healthier to focus on ideas & principles-growth, love, compassion-& not individuals.
