Additionally, while A. caudivolvulus populations have been declining at least over the last million years, high levels of inbreeding over the last few generations show that this species is being affected by the current coastal development in UAE.

A. caudivolvulus populations present extremely low genetic diversity among Asaccus species, as well as among other vertebrates, making them especially susceptible to new threats. One individual even presents the lowest heterozygosity ever reported in reptiles! 📣📣

In this paper, we evaluate past and current trends of A. caudivolvulus and other Asaccus species by generating a reference genome for the species, and sequencing whole genomes for up to 23 additional individuals.

However, the habitat of A. caudivolvulus is exponentially decreasing due to the ongoing development of coastal areas for tourism infrastructure, emphasizing the need of a conservation genomics study for this species.
