The reason I feel this is, is because the infected in Years are just zombies. Whereas the infected in Days are bloody, spitting, shaking, screaming vectors of disease. Even getting close to one means death. You would think after the horrors of covid that would hit harder now.

But the film does not really show the consequences of the apocalypse. The infected are no way near as scary as in the first film. None of the infected are as terrifying as Marvin Campbell, who played mailer in the first film.

The idea that Jamie is a bad dad is crazy, he’s roughly 35. So he would have been 11 tops when the virus broke out. So he has live all his adult life in the apocalypse. Likely risking his life every day for his community.

The infected returning to nature for example makes no sense as the virus is man made. The infected are supposed to be pure vectors of a disease. A highly communicable disease.

Now I will sympathise that the text itself has this wishy washy attitude to “is man the monster?” That it fails to pin down. Something Alex Garland gets up his own arse about often in his own scripts.

If you have ever seen a kitchen sink drama you would understand that life is not a marvel movie and depicting people in dire straits is not an invitation to judge but to sympathise. That the world can beat you down and it’s not fair.

Dogshit takes like this “really make you think” like a child. Wow so deep. It’s almost like Jamie has a duty to his community as well as his family. A family that survive the infected hellscape by sheer luck. This is what you get for having no knowledge of UK cinema.
