Would love to juxtapose these numbers with the economic impact of LSU football on the state of Louisiana. Just for some perspective.
LSU is currently paying 3 head football coaches: 💰 Lane Kiffin: Just hired ($91M contract 💰 Brian Kelly: Fired 2025 ($54M buyout) 💰 Ed Orgeron: Fired 2021 ($17M buyout) (h/t @whalexander_)

@BenjaminSWatson When I was in the Sport Admin program at LSU so 2009-2013 one 6 game home football schedule had an estimated average economic impact of $142 million dollars for Baton Rouge.

@BenjaminSWatson I would love to see an analysis of the Univ of Alabama, Tuscaloosa & the state of Alabama pre- and post-Saban. My guess is he was vastly underpaid for his economic benefit to the University, city & state.

@BenjaminSWatson I would argue that the credit for that economic impact belongs to the fans who support the program, not the coaches. No fans =no economic impact. Also give credit to the restaurant owners, hotel owners, etc. They add to the college football expansion as much as they benefit.

@BenjaminSWatson Google AI said 21-22 fiscal year LSU football had $500 million dollar impact to state’s economy.

@BenjaminSWatson Amen. All In = $200M is about 3% of Annual LSU Statewide effect on economic output (and that’s 3 years ago). Less than 1% of LSU’s $ contribution to Statewide earnings ($2.4 Billion) & (Over 47,000 jobs).

@BenjaminSWatson "The most recent detailed study covers FY 2021–2022, attributing over 97% of the $497.5 million in total athletics economic output to flagship programs, with football accounting for the majority."

@BenjaminSWatson Something is definitely wrong at LSU . Shoveling away money like this for a football coach. Bad management

@BenjaminSWatson @BenjaminSWatson for numbers, @LSUfootball has consistently written checks back to the Academic side of the university for $10M for years. That's just the Athletic department side of things. That doesn't count all of the revenue generated throughout the community during football

No counselor knows your child like you do. So why would you let one promise to change something that can't be changed? Your child needs you.

@BenjaminSWatson Good post. It’s WAY higher than what they paying out. 1 playoff run would offset that easily

@BenjaminSWatson Would love to see the same perspective for Auburn football and its economic impact on the state of Alabama. I bet they owe their ex coaches more than LSU does.

@BenjaminSWatson Just measure the athletic department budget. I assume they aren't in debt, but maybe I'm wrong.

@BenjaminSWatson That they siphon money away from people that could be spent on actual goods and services? Sports is money spent on entertainment.

@BenjaminSWatson 47 ranked in education, 38th in gdp per capita, 48th in median income, near worst in poverty rates, number 1 in corruption. Maybe less money for banging heads and more for filling them.

@BenjaminSWatson Very interesting numbers for a state that has the highest poverty share in America!

@BenjaminSWatson Throwing money at problems in LA doesn’t solve a thing…that’s pretty much been proven over last 50 years

@BenjaminSWatson That and the impact alone of football success on enrollment. I know SEC out of state enrollment has been up. I know that's not all based on sports, but it def has some positive effect

@BenjaminSWatson The economic impact of LSU football takes place with or without coaches (and players). There are coaches etc because of the economic impact, not the other way around. This applies to all of CFB and college sports in general. Fans and communities are the center of gravity.

@BenjaminSWatson One season of season ticket sales probably covers most of this. About 80k season tickets sold last season, starting at about $700 per
