Hirlam and ARPEGE models highlight the risk of heavy rain turning to heavy sleet or wet snow across parts of southern England, mostly over high ground but perhaps to lower levels at times. Also a flooding risk with > 50 mm possible for some parts of the south-east.

Truly remarkable 06Z freezing rain sounding from Larkhill. As snow falls through the warm layer at 850hPa (around 1500m), it melts and falls to the ground, freezing on contact with any surface. Soundings like this are extremely rare in the UK #BeastFromTheEast

Brrrr it’s cold out there! It’s currently -3.9C in Reading at 1110UTC. If temperatures remain below -0.6C all day, we’ll break the record from 1942 for the coldest March day on record! #BeastFromTheEast

Some stats from last night @UniofReading: -- With -7.5°C, it was the coldest night since February 2012 -- With -15.2°C on the grass, it was the coldest grass min since February 1986 -- Coldest night so late in the winter since the infamous winter of 1947

There seems to be consistent model agreement that a shortwave trough will cross the UK from the north-east on Tuesday, bringing snowfall to much of Wales and northern England #UKsnow

Exceptionally cold 850hPa temperatures over the UK next week (< -15C). Certainly the coldest week since March 2013 or December 2010 with frequent snow showers in the east and a chance of more widespread heavy snowfall on Tuesday and Friday! ❄️

0900UTC visible satellite shows cloud breaking up more than expected across parts of central and southern England. If clouds remain broken, we could see 15C in the southeast and a handful of local January maximum records broken
