Without blanks and vowels, the pattern is less clear. The letter 'S' occurs most frequently in over 54% of cells, especially around the edges of the crossword.

There is an interesting trend in the layout of cell blanks. These blanks frequently form a # crosshatch. With one of these occurring in at least half of all crosswords. The most frequent non-blank cell is 'S' in the top-right corner, occurring in 27.3% of crosswords.
